"Bye Mom"

by Maggie Zarcufsky

On that awful day that my son Shaun took his life, I woke up out of a deep sleep. I was wide awake right away and went into the bathroom to take a bath.

As I sat in the tub I heard Shaun, right outside the bathroom door, say "Bye Mom".

I couldn't get dressed quickly enough -- I went running through the house and of course couldn't find him. When the police told me the estimated time of death was some time Friday afternoon, I said "That's right". The cop looked at me weirdly, but I know exactly what time he pulled the trigger: 1:33 PM (that's the time I heard him say good-bye) ... and maybe his last thought was for me, his mother.
