A Dream About a Casket
by Maggie Zarcufsky
It happened about a year before my son Shaun's death. I was working two jobs, and this particular night I had called in "sick". I just needed a break from working the midnight shift.
I went to bed rather early because I wanted to see Shaun off to school, which really never happened; I used to come home from work after he'd already left.
Anyhow, I woke up in the middle of the night and had to get up because of the nightmare I just had. In this dream I was in a funeral parlor and there were a whole bunch of people; I recognized only some. Most were teenagers. It took quite some time to make my way over to the casket to see who was in it. I couldn't believe when I saw my son lying there, and the main thing bothering me was the liner of the casket ... as if that's the most important thing at a time like that!
It was peach colored, and I said "Why on earth would you put a boy on that color liner?" That really bothered me.
I stayed up most of that night and never mentioned anything to anyone about it.
About a year later, at my son's funeral, I couldn't help but notice the casket lining ... yeah, it was peach. But I never asked them to change it ... it was just meant to be, I suppose.
