At the Bedroom Door

by Cynthia Du Bose

This story is a "sign from before" -- a premonition, perhaps, of things to come.

My son Chris's best friend is named Don. They had been friends since the age of 13 and knew each other inside and out. After Chris died, Don was helping me to move some of his stuff from the rented storage room where we had it stored to my house.

At one point in the conversation, Don mentioned that he had had a dream about Chris about a month before he died. I was dumbstruck at what he had to tell me.

In this dream, Chris was right outside his bedroom door, in the hall. There was a huge white light in the background, coming closer and closer. Don knew that Chris was in trouble, and tried to call to him, but Chris just turned away and became more and more distant. The white light kept approaching closer and closer, and finally it whooshed by the room, and Chris was not there any more.

In November of 2000, soon after Don's dream, Chris took his life by lying on the railroad tracks in front of a train.

In his pocket were lyrics from an Electric Light Orchestra song, The 10538 Overture, which includes these eerie words:

"Did you see him run, did you see him fall
Did his life flash by at the bedroom door?"
